Le Sorelle (The Sisters), owner and creator of UASHMAMA®, is a small family business in Montecatini, just outside the walls of Lucca, Tuscany. Formerly a popular tourist destination, Montecatini experienced a major decline in the last decade, surpassed by more promoted destinations. Until father Marco, who had spent his entire life working in the shoe industry, developed a material made from simply woven vegetable fibers that could compete with real leather. .

UASHMAMA® washable paper looks and feels like leather but can be washed in the washing machine! Although the manufacturing process is similar to leather, the paper is stretched and colored without the use of chemicals, making it durable and resistant to washing and everyday use. UASHMAMA® washable paper is made using a cultivated fiber and does not contribute to deforestation. The Marconi family deposited their washable paper under the name AGGO®.

The first products that Marco and his wife Emanuela made in this material were simple paper bags, perfect containers for storing all kinds of items, from fuits or bread to small flower pots. Emanuela started selling them in her shop Le Sorelle, named after her 4 daughters. Today UASHMAMA® is sold worldwide and can count on many enthousiasts.

Thanks to the growth of UASHMAMA®, the village is flourishing again, and a large group of local men and women are employed to sew the paper bags at their homes, a so-called 'cottage industry'.
The more sophisticated bags and handbags are produced in Florence by manufacturers who also produce for the fashion elite.
